Hymn for the Living

Good morning morning, mornings are never kind
To stuttering spirits who burn in the light
His trembling fingers will be of no use today
He never really believed he could do it anyway

We slip through ourselves and each other sailing our ghost ships
We once were alive, but life has led to ruin
All that’s left is hollow, hollow and sinking
I see you smile, but I know it’s wishful thinking

He wakes up screaming, spent all night trying to get to sleep
He’s tired of dreaming about his failure and his fears
That when he dies he’ll be buried in an unmarked grave
And no-one will cry or visit or even know his name

We slip through ourselves and each other sailing our ghost ships
We once were alive, but life has led to ruin
All that’s left is hollow, hollow and sinking
I see you smile, but I know it’s wishful thinking

And I’m sorry I apologise
There’s been nothing there behind my eyes
Behind a shroud day by day
I’m sorry that I’ve been away
Can’t seem to fit it all together
Can’t seem to break through this glaze
White lies we tell and tell them well
Black stains my conscience darkens my days

We slip through ourselves and each other sailing our ghost ships
We once were alive, but life has led to ruin
All that’s left is hollow, hollow and sinking
I see you smile, but I know it’s wishful thinking
